Celebration Lounge

This year, at the 2007 Portland Marathon, marathoners celebrated their 26.2-mile accomplishment in style at the first annual Celebration Lounge. The lounge, which was the size of a city block located at the start/finish line, offered VIP treatment with pre-paid participants food, entertainment, massage, and private restrooms.

"This is wonderful. We've never eaten breakfast by candlelight at a marathon," said lounge participants from New York.

On the morning of the event, lounge participants had a calm place to check their belongings, stretch, relax, eat breakfast, and have a personal escort to the starting line. After the race, marathoners crossed the finish line and headed to the lounge where they received spa-like treatment, including a massage, entertainment, food and beverages, access to a changing area, and a relaxation and stretching area. This year, participants paid an additional fee for access to the lounge.

Partnerships with Pinocchio's, a local Italian restaurant, The Massage Clinic in Tigard, and local radio station, Movin 107.5, helped the Marathon rollout the red-carpet treatment for lounge participants. The Portland Marathon is one of the only marathons in the country that offers marathoners this type of opportunity. Event directors from around the country visited the lounge and felt it was a unique concept in the running industry. Many of them hope to implement something similar at their events.

"Marathoners work hard. They train for months to prepare for this event, and they deserve to have a place to sip champagne and get a massage. We are proud to offer them this VIP-treatment," said Les Smith, the event director of the Portland Marathon.

Smith is excited to bring these types of services right to the finish line for marathoners who want to spend a little extra money to receive some much-deserved pampering.

"I've run a lot of marathons and I have never seen anything like this," said a lounge participant from Hawaii. "What an amazing experience! I am absolutely coming back for the Portland Marathon and the Celebration Lounge next year," he added.
